The “O” Word
Organic foods. They’ve become a trend and a nebulous topic. So many food product conglomerates are now boasting organic ingredients (as we’ve seen in a previous post, restaurants are even using organic tea offerings as a selling point) and I know from personal discussions that organic foods exist in an ongoing debate about their presumed and actual benefits. A recent article in the NY Times here does a great job joining the conversation and presenting the debate. It’s always good to realize that companies are banking on selling you products. So don’t presume your best interest is always at heart. “Healthy” foods are often misleading. And don’t get food term conflation-itis and just assume that organic means better for you or locally grown. It does not!
Be your own researcher and advocate. Be a nerd. Be paranoid. Whatever it takes to get what’s in your best interest!
