Poster Child for Too Much Too Soon
Hi, my name is Annabel and I am a recovering extremist. It began as a subtle transformation, six years of this journey has been me slowly and healthily weaning myself off of bad habits and gaining the knowledge and determination to gain and stick to good, healthy habits. Then I said, “Bah! I want it all NOW!” A few months ago, I was about 25 pounds heavier and running only sporadically. More recently, I was running 6 miles a day at least, quickly lost some weight and had what the Dr.’s assistant called, “manly quads!” (Thanks, by the way). And now, here I am with tendinitis in my right knee and the question looming of how painful it will be to run the marathon. Being the stubborn mule that I am, I’m still planning on running it — I just can’t run until then. Tendinitis, for those of you don’t know, is essentially inflammation of the tendon that comes with overuse. Basically, I tried too much too soon and my poor knee could not keep up. So for now, I have to take anti-inflammatory meds, ice the knee, and stick to exercises that don’t put pressure on the knee, like the ellyptical and circuit training. Lame. So the moral of this story is: CHILL! Going from one extreme to another can give you a nice little endorphin high but then you’ll be left high and dry by your right knee right before a marathon, pleading with the knee Gods and bemoaning the treadmill as you watch the cardio junkies get their fix at the gym while you’re peddling on the sationary bike like a fool. Not like I know from experience….oh wait…
