Getting Over A Funk & Contagious Grins
Hey guys!
Today just wasn’t my day. I was in a funk. I was overly self-reflective and pensive and all I wanted to do was paint the sky a dark shade of gray to match my melancholy mood. Thankfully, I got over it. Granted, I got over it around 10 p.m. after I did a 6-mile run, but still… Once clarity hit, I realized I needed to get over myself & needed to be able to laugh at myself.
How Bella Gets Out of a Funk
- Exercise. Usually I’m in a funk precisely because I haven’t exercised and know I should, wonder when I will, etc. I think if I just started my day with exercise, I would avoid a lot of these funks. It doesn’t have to be a 6 mile run either. Just getting outside to meander around is perfect enough to help alleviate the funk.
- Make a fool of myself. Making a fool of myself usually makes other people laugh. Making other people laugh makes me happy. Does this make you laugh?

(Umm this would be me last Sat…which would also explain why I said I was nursing a little hangover on Sunday, no?) - Pep talk. This might also fall into the making a fool of myself category, but I truly believe in giving myself pep talks. No, I don’t literally talk to myself (at least not in public tee-hee), but I do my best to say as many positive, look on the bright side, things to myself to remind me how fortunate I am. When I am able to see outside of my little bubble of funkness, I am able to see how beautiful my life really is.
- Phone a friend. You know that friend who you can truly be yourself around? Let’s face it, we spend a lot of our time on this beautiful Earth wearing a mask that changes from scenario to scenario, from person to person. It’s not a sad thing, it’s just more the nature of things. But sometimes it really does get burdensome to keep the front on for so long. Having friends who I can call up and be like, “Look…I am totally dreaming of cheesecake, hating exercise right now, wanting to change my name to Shakira and considering buying a one-way ticket to Ireland.” It feels so damn good to just say it like it is.
I am happy to report that on a day in which I could have wreacked havoc on my health goals, I refrained. Can’t guarantee that will always be the case. But I’m getting better. How do you guys get over a funk? Don’t you just love those friends with whom you can be 100% honest?
There were so many awesome blog posts and news articles in the past week (and yesterday alone!) that I am going to stop talking so much today and act as a resource broker instead (if only it came with a paycheck).

Did you guys check out my preliminary draft of the “Stuff Health-Conscious People Like” list here? If you had to choose your one favorite “healthy lifestyle” product, what would it be? What would you gift to a friend who was trying to live a more healthy lifestyle?

Bella, glad to hear you got yourself out of your funk without snacking it away. I’m also finding out that when I skip exercising I feel not quite right. I haven’t been to the gym for several days, and I’m feeling it. I’m going today fo’ sho.

I was definitely in a funk yesterday… and you know what – it was precisely because I didn’t exercise. Going to work out would have made everything better, but instead I decided to throw myself a pity party and cry. Genius. I also took today off and plan on exercising and checking some things off my to-do list. I hope it helps!
