Thoughts on a 10K & Pre-Chewed News

Hey guys!

Happy Tuesday! I hope you guys had a great weekend!

Citrus is Good. Unless you eat 10 pounds of it the night before a race…Thoughts on my first 10k!

I ran my first 10k this past Saturday — the Wrigley River Run 5/10k & Tadpole Trot! It was so much fun! I had been planning on running the 5k w/ my mom, but after she bailed (hi, mom!) ;) , I was like “why not do the 10k, lazy butt? You run 6 miles all the time!” So, I did. And that amped, nonchalant attitude only took me so far when, during the run, my body felt like I was carrying bricks on my shoulders and the 10 pounds of citrus fruit I had eaten the night before created a swamp of acid in my stomach (delightful depiction, no?). You know how I write about loving running all the time? Yea, I was eating my words that day. At the 2-mile mark, I smacked my head and thought, “are you kidding me? I think they meant mile 4. There’s no way it’s only been 2 miles.” I’m sure if I had passed a mirror I would have seen a scowl and frown on my face. One of the photographers sweetly said, “hey, smile!” as I passed. I smiled. Then considered asking him if he’d like to switch places (“shhh, no one will know. Here, just take my bib..”.). But, I kept running and made the time of 1 hour, 8 seconds — 9:41 pace. All that womp-womp attitude aside, finishing the race felt so amazing that I came back home and scoured Active.com to find more local races. What can I say? Running for me is like a schizo, love-hate, but can’t-get-enough-of-this-torture kind of relationship.

If you guys are local, or in the vicinity of, Long Beach, CA, I highly recommend this event. It was cozy — around 500 people — and very well-organized. Next year’s event will be June 11, 2011 — mark it in your calendars!

I totally agree with the live/hate relatioship with running. Sometimes I truly wonder why, oh why, do I do this to myself! But afterwards I love it again and off I go planning another run. We are a crazy bunch huh?

Congrats on a great time! I am totally nuts too so I feel ya. During just about every race I have moments of pure pain and cursing running and the course and everyone because I push myself so hard, but I never regret it at the end.

During the half marathons I’ve done, I’ve had a few miles of bliss (usually towards the middle, around 4-8 miles in), but most miles it’s just sheer body torture, hehe. However – training runs I usually love. Every 12 miler I’ve done just before the halfs have been pure joy. For some reason, that extra 1.1 mile does me in every time. :)

I love it though. Nothing feels better than finishing a race and beating your goals, and nothing matches the high after a good hard run!

I’m training for my first half marathon, and the “unknown” is pretty scary for me. I’m not really a runner, which is why I kinda want to do it…to prove to myself that I can. 2 months from today…eek. ! I have made the mistake of starting out too fast, due to the excitement of a race’s start. I did that at my first 5k and totally gassed out around 2.5 miles. When I did a 10k, I made sure to pace myself (of course, the giant hill of a first mile helped to keep me from going too fast, that’s for sure).

thanks for doing our event. you need to read “Born to Run”
since i read it i have really concentrated on the joy of running during my work outs and races and it has helped really shift my mindset, reminding me to enjoy the running. whether you run or not it is a great story but i think runners especially can take a lot away from it.
