The Truth About Fats

FAT IS EVIL!
Photobucket

It leads to disease. And..uh…fat!

So let’s eat Special K bars instead!

You can tell I’m being a sarcastic lil brat, right? ;)

I had to share this article on where the current debate stands on fat (i.e. debunks the myth that “low fat” is a healthy diet plan, & that all saturated fats are ”bad”). It will blow your mind. One thing people are in consensus about? Trans fats are killer.

Check it via Civil Eats here.

And don’t worry, vegans, you can still get plenty of yummy and good-for-you fats from avocados and nuts.

Where do  you currently stand on the “‘good fat’ versus ‘bad fat’ versus ‘no fat is best’ debate”?

I’m so glad that (for the most part) we’re beyond that crazy no-fat 90′s craze!

I’ve wondered about that so much I’m now working on a masters in nutrition. My great grandmother was raised on butter and lived healthfully into her 90′s. I eat a high-fat but definitely low-simple-carb diet (actually, not a diet, I’ve never dieted, I just have no sweet tooth) and I’m chronically underweight and have perfect cholesterol numbers. However, my husband, who for 8 years ate the exact same diet as me (even the same portion sizes) has LDL in the “high” range and is a normal weight for his height despite being taller and more muscled than me. Makes me wonder if what we eat even matters?! Or.. perhaps the high-fat, low-simple-carb thing is protective. My husband’s HDL is healthfully high, his triglycerides are low, and his LDL particle size is large (which is the safe size), so perhaps this is a good as it gets for him considering his genes.

And genes, as I’m learning, have a lot to do with it, which makes annecdotes like the one above less-than-useful. Whatever — bring on the avocados!!!

Which idiot thinks “no fat is best”?! Our brain is all fat…only ppl whose brain doesn’t function well will think no fat is best…because their brain doesn’t have enough fat, presumably.

Mean snark aside, I love fats of all forms. I agree trans-fat, which is a man-made fat, isn’t great, but I don’t mind it in small doses. Favorite fat is nuts though.
